Peru, Neb.--The William Penn baseball team closed out a four-game series against the Peru State Bobcats on Saturday. The offense struggled in both games, as the Statesmen dropped both contests by scores of 1-0 and 3-0.

The navy and gold had a chance to get on the board early after a Jameson Hart (Sr., Sarnia, Ontario, Sports Management) triple, but he was stranded at third. Although WPU was unable to put a run on the scoreboard, the hosts had an equally tough time breaking through against starter Brian Thomas (So., Shingle Springs, Calif.).
Thomas posted zero after zero on the scoreboard, and the game finally reached extra innings still knotted in a scoreless standstill. The Bobcats, unfortunately, were finally able to break through, and took the game three pitcher's duel by a 1-0 final.
Thomas was the tough-luck loser, throwing 7.1 innings and allowing just the one earned run on four hits and two walks. He struck out five in the complete game effort. Tim Jean (So., Libertyville, Ill., Public Accounting) turned in the only multi-hit effort for the Statesmen from the top of the lineup.

The Statesmen had a chance to score in the first after a two-out double from Tanner Bedier (Jr., Bondurant, Iowa, Industrial Technology), but he was stranded in scoring position. The Bobcats were able to manufacture a run in the bottom of the third, then added two more to their lead in the fourth.
The visitors had another chance to get on the board in the sixth as they put two runners in scoring position with only one out. Unfortunately, the Bobcats were able to work themselves out of trouble, and finished off a scoreless seventh to sweep the doubleheader.
Stetson Denning (Jr., Queens Creek, Ariz., Sports Management) was charged with the loss after allowing three earned runs in his four innings of work. Tyler Gregory (Sr., Peoria Heights, Ill., Exercise Science) threw the final two innings, allowing just one hit in a scoreless outing. The Statesmen managed just four hits in the series finale, two of them off the bat of Bedier.
