Hargrove, Vanderwood Named WPU Players of the Month
Oskaloosa--The William Penn University Athletics Booster Club has announced its January Players of the Month.
Men's wrestler Cameron Hargrove (Sr., Bolingbrook, Ill., Sports Management) was named the male recipient, while women's wrestler Joanna Vanderwood (Sr., Graham, Wash., Nursing) earned the female honor. Both athletes received this recognition for the first time in their careers.
Hargrove showcased his dominance on the mat, compiling an impressive 5-1 record at the MVC Invite to secure fourth place at 165 pounds. The senior took down No. 13 Bridger Hall of Providence (Mont.) and recorded two technical falls and a pin. His lone setback came in a narrow 8-6 decision against the nation's No. 4-ranked wrestler. In dual competition, he added three more victories, pinning his opponent from Benedictine, winning a decision against Graceland, and earning a commanding technical fall over Doane.
Vanderwood also delivered a standout month, excelling in both duals and tournament competition. She went undefeated at the NWCA Duals, highlighted by a 27-second fall against Saint Mary (Kan.), two decision wins, and a forfeit victory. She continued her success with another decision win in a dual against Central Methodist. Vanderwood then shined at the Indiana Tech Open, reaching the finals after securing three straight technical falls before falling to the nation's No. 4-ranked wrestler.
