Matt Byers is in his third year as Assistant Football Coach, serving as Co-Defensive Coordinator and Secondary Coach.

Byers came to WPU from Friends University where he served as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for three years.

Prior to his time at Friends, Byers was at Bethel College (Kan.) from 2015-2017, working with the wide receivers in 2015 before eventually transitioning to Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach for two seasons.

A 2013 graduate of the University of Iowa with a degree in American Studies, Byers competed in track and field. He was a three-time Big Ten champion, two time All-American, and is the school record-holder in the javelin.

After graduation, he returned to Wichita East and worked with the wide receivers for one campaign.

A native of Wichita, Kan., Byers was a three-sport athlete at Wichita East HS (football, basketball, track and field) and in 2009, he was named the Barry Sanders High School Male Athlete of the Year for the state of Kansas.
