Marshall, Hammonds Erupt from Perimeter in Win Over Culver-Stockton
Oskaloosa--Cam Marshall (So., San Diego, Calif., Sports Management) and Manny Hammonds (Fr., Des Moines, Iowa, New Media) had career nights off the bench as the Statesmen men's basketball team defeated Culver-Stockton 93-83 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play Wednesday.
William Penn (3-6, 2-3 Heart) outshot the Wildcats 45.3%-35.7% and made 12 three-pointers, including a combined 11 from the Marshall and Hammonds as the bench scored 49 points for the victors.
The hosts, who stayed in the lead for nearly the entire contest, scored the first four points of the bout on layups from Jaz Farrell (Sr., Miramar, Fla., Undecided) and Jayvin Brown (So., Waldorf, Md., Business Management).
For every scoring run, however, C-SC (3-4, 1-2 Heart) seemed to have an answer. WPU pulled out to a 15-5 edge at the 13:29 mark, but the Wildcats clawed back in and eventually tied the game at 19-19 and then claimed their first advantage at 25-24.
Ontario Chapman (Sr., Evanston, Ill., Psychology) then took over and poured in four buckets in less than two minutes as the navy and gold entered halftime up 45-40.
Hammonds was on fire from deep throughout the first stanza, making all five of his three-point attempts en route to a game-high 16 points. He finished with 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting (5-for-8 3-PT).
Culver-Stockton continued to pester the home squad, including tying the game at 48-48. Brown countered with a long ball to give WPU the lead for good and then it was Marshall's turn to show off his perimeter proficiency.
The sophomore single-handedly kept the Wildcats at bay over the next several minutes of play, connecting on five trifectas. Marshall matched Hammonds with 20 points, going 7-for-12 overall and 6-for-10 from beyond the arc.
Overall, the Statesmen were 12-for-34 from three-point land for a 35.3% mark.
C-SC refused to be an easy out, though, and trimmed the margin to three at 76-73 with 6:05 still remaining in regulation. A combination of defensive stops and just enough offense fortunately held the Wildcats in the rearview as the Statesmen went on a 10-3 run to put the game on ice.
WPU overcame a rough night at the free-throw line, going just 13-for-26, but making enough tries down the stretch to close out the Wildcats.
Brown, with 13 points, and CJ Washington (Sr., Houston, Texas, Sports Management), with 12, also eclipsed double figures, while Chapman and Farrell both ended up with eight.
Starters Mike Elliott (So., Indianapolis, Ind., Business Management) and Larontae Mormant (Sr., Bloomington, Minn., Business Management) contributed six and five points, respectively.
William Penn owned a 52-48 rebounding advantage, headlined by 10 boards by both Washington and Marcus Bell (Sr., Shreveport, La., Wellness and Recreation). A total of 12 offensive rebounds led to the home team holding a 14-11 edge in second-chance points.
Bell's contributions were not just limited to the boards as he also dished out a team-best seven assists.
WPU committed 11 turnovers, compared to nine for C-SC, but the Statesmen were only outscored 12-10 in points off errors.
"Our bench players were amazing tonight," Head Coach John Henry said. "In addition to Cam Marshall and Manny Hammonds having huge nights from the perimeter, Marcus Bell and others also played great."
