Brown Has Big Night in Road Loss to Central Methodist
Fayette, Mo.--Jayvin Brown (So., Waldorf, Md., Wellness and Recreation) tried to single-handedly will his squad to victory, but the defense could not slow down Central Methodist as the Statesmen men's basketball team fell 103-90 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play Wednesday.
William Penn (5-19, 4-16 Heart) put up big numbers, but failed to keep up with the Eagles (18-5, 14-5 Heart) who posted a 47.9%-44.3% shooting advantage. The game did not have a crazy abundance of fouls (34 total), but the sides still combined for 60 total free throws. Behind an 11-for-12 showing by Brown, WPU was exceptional at the charity stripe at 22-for-26, while CMU was 25-for-34.
The visitors dug a deep hole early, trailing 12-2 at the 16:25 mark and unfortunately never recovered. Down 20 late in the first half, the navy and gold were able to strong with six unanswered to trail 50-36 at intermission.
The Statesmen erupted for 54 second-half points, but failed to make up any ground (CMU scored 53) as the teams exchanged blows throughout the final 20 minutes of play. In the end, the Eagles' perimeter proficiency was the biggest difference. They were considerably better from behind the arc, hitting 10 three-pointers at 41.7%, while the navy and gold had just six long balls at a 31.6% clip.
Helped by his 11 free throws, Brown tallied a team-high 30 points. The sophomore was 9-for-19 from the floor.
Jaz Farrell (Sr., Miramar, Fla., Interdisciplinary Studies), with 17 points, and Manny Hammonds (Fr., Des Moines, Iowa, New Media), with 14, also eclipsed double digits in the loss.
Ontario Chapman (Sr., Evanston, Ill., Psychology) was next with eight points, while Cam Marshall (So., San Diego, Calif., Sports Management) headed the William Penn bench with seven points. Willie Anderson (Jr., Norristown, Pa., Applied Computer Science) contributed six points as well.
Larontae Mormant (Sr., Bloomington, Minn., Business Management) recorded nine rebounds as the visitors narrowly lost the rebounding fight 42-40.
"Jayvin Brown was an absolute warrior tonight," Head Coach John Henry said. "Unfortunately, we just simply did not get enough defensive stops."
