Statesmen Claim Runner-Up Honors at Season Opener

Oskaloosa--The William Penn men's golf team earned silver as it opened its campaign by hosting the Statesmen Invitational Monday and Tuesday.

WPU was second out of five teams with a two-round score of 593 (290-303) at the par-70 Edmundson Golf Course.  Hawkeye CC took the title at 576 (282-294).

Kaeden Anderson and Bruno Jimenez, both of Hawkeye CC, tied for the medalist award at two-under 138.

Austin Hafner (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sports Management) topped the navy and gold, placing third out of 28 individuals at 143 (68-75).

Andon Herrera (Fr., Katy, Texas, Business Management) was also in the top five in his collegiate debut, finishing fifth at 145 (71-74).

Jonathan Jarvis (Sr., Burlington, Iowa, Business Management) was next as he tied for eighth at 152 (74-78), while Trace White (Sr., Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Physical Education) tied for 11th at 155 (79-76).  Gabe Kramer (Fr., Grimes, Iowa, Computer Science) rounded out the varsity lineup in a tie for 13th at 156 (77-79).

William Penn's varsity reserve teams were in action as well and Logan Olson (Fr., El Paso, Texas, Engineering) paced the reserves in a tie for 11th at 155 (77-78).

"We played some good junior college competition in our first tournament of the year," Head Coach Elise Warne said.  "We had limited time to prepare with the weather this past week, and we have a lot of newcomers, so it was exciting to see who would perform on game day."

"Austin led the way, but we also had some impressive results from some of our new guys," Warne added.  "This team is deep and it will be exciting for us as coaches to figure out our lineups each week.  This was a good step in the right direction for what we want to achieve this year."

Next: William Penn travels to Hutchinson, Kan. next Tuesday and Wednesday to compete in the Crazy Horse Challenge.  Play will be contested at the Crazy Horse Sports Club Golf Course.
