William Penn Finishes Second at Rain-Shortened Home Invite

Oskaloosa--The Statesmen men's golf team walked off its own course with the silver as it hosted the Statesmen Invitational Monday and Tuesday.

In a tournament shortened by weather to just 27 holes, WPU was second out of seven squads with a score of 437 (288-149) at the par-70 Edmundson Golf Course.  Grand View slipped by the navy and gold for the title at 433 (289-144).

Jonathan Jarvis (Sr., Burlington, Iowa, Business Management) and Grand View's Harrison Froling tied for first out of 40 players at 106, but Froling (71-35) won the playoff to earn the individual crown.

Jarvis posted a 71 on Monday and was even-par 35 on the back nine before the skies opened and forced the end of the event.

Luke Galeazzi (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Business Management), at 70-38, and Austin Hafner (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sports Management), at 72-36, tied for second at 108, while Andon Herrera (Fr., Katy, Texas, Business Management) placed seventh at 110 (74-36).

Trace White (Sr., Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Physical Education (K-12)) concluded the varsity scoring in a tie for eighth at 111 (72-39).

William Penn's reserve players were also on the links at the Invitational with Danny McQuade (Jr., Tucson, Ariz., Political Science) pacing the group at 111 (75-36) to tie for eighth.

The Statesmen 'B' team was third at 451 (297-154), while the 'C' squad was fifth at 482 (324-158).

"Our spring home tournament is always a great week for us to get all of our players on the course and to celebrate our seniors," Head Coach Elise Warne said.  "We cannot thank our three seniors, Austin Hafner, Jonathan Jarvis, and Trace White, enough for all of their efforts during their time in the program.  Jon performed the best of the bunch this week, going to a playoff to try and get the win.  Unfortunately, he was beat out, but the whole team was there to support him."

"We had some good performances throughout our 17-man squad and ultimately came up a few shots short of Grand View," Warne added.  "The weather was unpredictable on the second day, but overall it was a positive end to the regular season.  I am excited about the next two weeks as we prepare for conference."

Next Up: William Penn travels to Moravia on April 29-30 to compete in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship.  Play will be contested at The Preserve Golf Course.
