William Penn Takes Eighth at Central Classic

Iowa City--The Statesmen men's golf team fell off the pace in the second day of competition, but still secured a solid outing at the Central Classic Monday and Tuesday.

WPU finished eighth out of 12 teams with a two-round score of 624 (308-316) at the par-72 Finkbine Golf Course.  Luther walked off with the team hardware at 587 (295-292).

Thomas Lyaudet of Knox (Ill.) earned the individual medalist laurel with a three-under 141 (70-71).

Andon Herrera (So., Katy, Texas, Business Management) started play strong, matching Lyaudet with a two-under 70 on Monday.  Unfortunately, the sophomore faltered in the second round and posted an 81 to finish in a tie for 14th at 151.

Francois Assaud (Sr., Montelimar, France, Sports Management) was the lone Statesmen to card two rounds under 80 as he tied for 19th at 153 (74-79).

Luke Galeazzi (Sr., Knoxville, Iowa, Business Management) was next in a tie for 30th at 156 (81-75), while Nicholas Moore (So., Hurst, Texas, Business Management) ended up tied for 58th at 167 (86-81).

Clay Morse (So., Sigourney, Iowa, Business Management) completed the varsity lineup in 64th at 171 (83-88).

Kinnick Pritchard (Fr., Newton, Iowa), in 55th at 166 (86-80), and Alvaro Rodriguez (Fr., Gijon, Spain, Business Management), in a tie for 65th at 175 (84-91), also competed as individuals for the navy and gold.

"We had this tournament circled on our calendar," Head Coach Elise Ibrahim said.  "Finkbine, which is the home of the University of Iowa golf team, is a great course and we knew there would be a great field.  We unfortunately did not have the strongest result and know we have work to do to refine parts of our game.  We may change up the lineup some more moving forward and continue to give players chances to earn their varsity spot."

Next Up: William Penn travels to Ankeny next Monday and Tuesday to compete in the Grand View Invitational.  Play will be contested at Otter Creek Golf Course.
