Statesmen Face Huge Test at Grand View Open

Des Moines--The William Penn men's wrestling team had another barometer reading of sorts Saturday as it faced off against a large and competitive field at the Grand View Open.

In a tournament so big that it was split into an Open division and a Freshman/Sophomore division, 165-pounder Cameron Hargrove (Jr., Bolingbrook, Ill., Sports Management) was the squad leader as he placed sixth.

Hargrove won four times at the Open, including twice by technical fall and twice more by major decision.

Kael Bunce (Sr., Stockbridge, Mich., Mechanical Engineering) also had his hand raised four times at 157 pounds, headlined by a pair of major decisions as well as one fall.

149-pounder Quinten Aney (So., Mediapolis, Iowa, Business Management) was thrice a victor as well with two coming via major decision.

Lane Scorpil (So., Columbus Junction, Iowa, Industrial Technology) pinned a pair of foes at 133 pounds, while 157-pounder Drew Evans (Jr., Collinsville, Ill., Business Management) also pinned one opponent.

Jesus Diaz (Sr., Miami, Fla., Sociology) walked off with one major decision, and the duo of 165-pounder Ryan Van Donselaar (Jr., Otley, Iowa, Exercise Science) and 184-pounder Branson Bottorff (Sr., Mackinaw, Ill., Industrial Technology) both won once Saturday as well.

141-pounder Cole Smith (Fr., Baxter, Iowa, Biology) and 184-pounder Kendal Pugh (Fr., Letts, Iowa, Business Management) led WPU in the Freshman/Sophomore division with two falls apiece.  Tavian Thomas (Fr., Omaha, Neb., Business Management) also pinned one opponent at 165 pounds.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Davenport next Wednesday to face St. Ambrose in a Heart of America Athletic Conference dual meet at 7 p.m.
