WPU Drops Another Close League Dual

WPU Drops Another Close League Dual

Fayette, Mo.--The Statesmen men's wrestling team pushed to the end, but again came up just short in a 25-20 Heart of America Athletic Conference dual meet loss to Central Methodist Friday.

William Penn (1-3, 1-3 Heart) won just four of the weight classes (three of the eight contested bouts), but bonus points kept the visitors in the meet until the last match of the night.

The navy and gold gave up six points by forfeiting at 125 pounds, but drew even with a forfeit win of their own by 133-pounder Lane Scorpil (So., Columbus Junction, Iowa, Industrial Technology).

Carson Jensen (Jr., Idaho Falls, Idaho, Exercise Science) then pinned Tyrick Clay in only 43 seconds at 141 pounds, while 149-pounder Quinten Aney (So., Mediapolis, Iowa, Business Management) pushed the advantage to 17-6 with a 19-2 technical fall against Mitchell Huber.

Unfortunately, the Eagles (3-1, 2-1 Heart) were slightly better over the next three matchups to trim the margin to two at 17-15.

Branson Bottorff (Sr., Mackinaw, Ill., Industrial Technology) then returned the momentum to WPU for a moment as he knocked off #25 Hayden Burks 7-4 at 184 pounds.

William Penn failed to hang on, however, as Central Methodist claimed the final two matches for the meet victory.

"Unfortunately, we were one match and a few points short again," Head Coach Aron Scott said.  "I am proud of Carson and Quinten for picking up early wins and for Branson knocking off a ranked guy.  We have a couple weeks to get things back on track before four meets at the Avila Duals.  We need to make really good use of this time."

Next Up: William Penn will travel to Crete, Neb. Saturday to compete in the Doane Open.  Action begins at 9 a.m.
