
Statesmen Take Advantage of Last Chance Meet
Pella--The William Penn men's wrestling team won numerous matches, including claiming one weight class, as it wrapped up the regular season at the Central Last Chance Invitational Friday.
Four grapplers reached the championship match with 133-pounder Lane Scorpil (So., Columbus Junction, Iowa, Industrial Technology) pacing the navy and gold with a title. The sophomore finished 3-0 on the night, including two falls and one technical fall. He defeated Riley Harger of Graceland by fall in 2:45 to take the crown.
Kael Bunce (Sr., Stockbridge, Mich., Mechanical Engineering) was one of three to capture the silver as the 157-pounder went 3-1 with a technical fall and major decision. He fell 7-4 to champion Colby Tool of Central in overtime.
125-pounder Jeffery Myers (So., Yelm, Wash., Elementary Education) also lost in a sudden-death championship matchup, dropping a 4-1 decision to Jose Salinas Nava of Schreiner. Myers won two of his three bouts (one fall, one major decision).
Heavyweight Isaac Boucher (Jr., Kalona, Iowa, Nursing) pinned a pair of foes before being turned away 5-3 by Hayden Hearne of Central in the title fight.
165-pounder Jesus Diaz (Sr., Miami, Fla., Sociology), with two technical falls, and 125-pounder Gentry Walston, with one fall and one technical fall, both placed third.
Brendan Ferenchik (Sr. Campobello, S.C., Business Management), at 133 pounds with one major decision (two wins total), ended up fourth, while Kendal Pugh (Fr., Letts, Iowa, Business Management), at 174 pounds with two falls and one major decision (three wins total), was fifth.
141-pounder Drew Evans (Jr., Collinsville, Ill., Business Management), 157-pounder Braden Peglow (So., Vail, Ariz., Business Management), 184-pounder Makail Stanley (Sr., Oreana, Ill., Biology), and 197-pounder Anthony Hackman (Fr., Shelley, Idaho, Psychology) all pinned one opponent at the Invitational, while 184-pounder Kaden Kaiser (So., Urbandale, Iowa, Undecided) was victorious once by technical fall and 141-pounder Sabri Sino (So., Franklin, Wis., Sports Management) had one win as well.
Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa next Friday and Saturday to host the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship. Action begins at 1 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
