WPU Breaks into Win Column in Senior Night Defeat of William Woods

Oskaloosa--The Statesmen men's wrestling team finally obtained its first dual meet victory of the season, defeating non-conference foe William Woods 46-10 on Senior Night Tuesday.

WPU (1-7) triumphed in six of the eight contested matches and picked up two additional forfeits as it won its first dual meet of the campaign.

Gentry Walston (So., New Sharon, Iowa, Human Resource Management) got the navy and gold rolling as he pinned Easton DeMilia in 1:59 at 125 pounds.

133-pounder Lane Scorpil (Jr., Columbus Junction, Iowa, Business Management) was then awarded a forfeit, while 141-pounder Carson Jensen (Sr., Idaho Falls, Idaho, Exercise Science) pushed the advantage to 14-0 with a fall in a time of 1:07 over Kael Glenn.

WPU was tripped up in its next bout, but Trent Evans (So., Houston, Texas, Mechanical Engineering) returned the momentum to the Statesmen side as he got past Whit Nichols in a 14-3 major decision at 157 pounds.

165-pounder Cameron Hargrove (Sr., Bolingbrook, Ill., Sports Management) won by an injury default, but the Owls (1-9) got a few of those points back at 174 pounds.

The remainder of the night belonged to the hosts, however, beginning with Branson Bottorff (Sr., Mackinaw, Ill., Industrial Technology) notching a fall in 1:56 over Dominic Mullin.

Anthony Hackman (So., Shelley, Idaho, Psychology) also won via fall at 197 pounds, doing so against Ben Stephens in a time of 4:07.

Jesse Schwery (Sr., Panama, Iowa, History) capped the meet with a forfeit at 285 pounds.

"This was a great team dual win from top to bottom tonight," Head Coach Drew Sams said.  "The guys came ready to compete and get a win to send these seniors out the right way.  I think we did a great job finishing matches tonight, as well as being able to change the momentum.  We took a couple losses, but the guys were able to go out and find big wins to shift the momentum immediately after.  It was a good team effort and I am proud of how these guys wrestled tonight.  I think we are hitting our stride at the right time!"
