Statesmen Swept in Heartbreaking Fashion

Statesmen Swept in Heartbreaking Fashion

Peru, Neb.--The William Penn softball team dropped two painful games to Peru State in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Sunday.

WPU (21-13, 5-5 Heart) fell by scores of 5-4 and 4-3 (8 innings).

The opener saw the visitors fall behind 4-0 after five innings as PSC (9-20, 4-6 Heart) scored once in the fourth and three more times in the fifth.

The Statesmen finally found a groove in the sixth and got all four runs back.  Chelsey Huff (Sr., Douds, Iowa, Exercise Science) headlined the frame with a two-run single that brought in Rylee Riesberg (So., Ankeny, Iowa, Exercise Science) and Ella Pierce (Sr., McClelland, Iowa, Business Management), while Huff herself scored on a one-bagger by Laila Smith (So., Olympia, Wash., Elementary Education).

Unfortunately, the Bobcats took the first contest with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Both squads managed eight hits with Tori Smith (So., Olympia, Wash., Secondary Education) going 3-for-4.  Laila Smith produced a pair of base knocks, while Peyton Naranjo (So., Ripon, Calif., Biology) had one hit alongside two walks.

The navy and gold got on the scoreboard first in the nightcap when Laila Smith touched home plate in the top of the first.

Peru State tied the game at 1-1 in the third and then the pitchers took over, resulting in four consecutive scoreless innings and a game that went to extras.

In the top of the eighth, Jessica Lathrop (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa, Exercise Science) gave the Statesmen the lead once again by scoring on a Laila Smith single, while Tori Smith drove in Naranjo with a double.

Unfortunately, the door could not be closed on the hosts as they sent three around the pads in the bottom half for another walk-off win.

The same as the opener, the teams tied for hits in the nightcap with seven apiece.  The Smith sisters each finished with two base knocks.

Huff struck out eight in 7 2/3 innings in a losing cause.
