
William Penn Shoots Past Park 75-59
Oskaloosa--The Statesmen women's basketball team lit it up from the field Saturday as it defeated Park 75-59 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
WPU (7-8, 4-5 Heart) won its season-high third game in a row by outshooting the Pirates 51.0%-34.3%, including posting a 43.5% clip from beyond the arc (10-for-23).
The navy and gold came out the gates on fire as Joslyn Herbeck (Jr., Fond du Lac, Wis., Sports Management) connected on three three-pointers that helped to a 14-7 lead. Zantasia White (Sr., Lubbock, Texas, Secondary Education) kept the run going with two more long balls as the Statesmen ended the first quarter up 28-12. The Statesmen made their first six trifectas.
William Penn's scoring unfortunately slowed in the second period as the Pirates (3-11, 1-8 Heart) held a 21-10 margin to pull within five at 38-33 by halftime.
The hosts once again found their offensive flow after intermission, headlined by Morgan Terry (Sr., Cornersville, Tenn., Biology) scoring 10 of the 18 points in the quarter to extend the Statesmen lead back to double digits. Terry finished with a team-high 19 points, while also posting five rebounds and five assists.
WPU doubled up PU 18-9 in the period to go up 56-42 entering the fourth and then the squad coasted to the finish line.
Four WPU players finished in double figures. Herbeck and Journie Augmon (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev., Human Services) followed Terry's lead with 13 points each, while Aiesha Feagins (Jr., Grand Prairie, Texas, Applied Mathematics) managed 11 bench points as well.
Ally Stewart (Sr., Victoria, Australia, Physical Education) scored nine points, while White finished the night with eight. The home side overcame being outrebounded 43-29, including a 24-9 deficit on the offensive boards.
The Statesmen held a 13-7 advantage in free throws, while also forcing 18 turnovers (just 12 for WPU). The 18 takeaways led to 22 WPU points.
"We had some good and some bad moments tonight," Head Coach Jenna Santi said. "Fortunately, the girls came back in the second half and played WPU basketball!"
Next Up: William Penn will travel to Peru, Neb. next Wednesday to take on Peru State in a Heart contest at 5:30 p.m.
