William Penn Dropped by Ranked Pride Squad
Dubuque--The Statesmen women's basketball team could not keep pace on the road against a ranked foe, falling 85-48 to #14 Clarke in Heart of America Athletic Conference play Monday.
WPU (8-10, 5-7 Heart), which pulled off a comeback win last Saturday over Evangel, failed to pull the shocker over the Pride (16-2, 10-2 Heart).
Behind a basket from Morgan Terry (Sr., Cornersville, Tenn., Biology) and a three-pointer by Zantasia White (Sr., Lubbock, Texas, Secondary Education), the visitors trailed just 8-5 after three minutes on the hardwood. Unfortunately, CU caught fire and went on a 17-0 run before finishing the quarter leading 30-13.
In the second quarter, the scoring slowed for the home team as the navy and gold tried to cut into the double-digit deficit before halftime. Ally Stewart (Sr., Victoria, Australia, Physical Education) and Alyssa Hames (Jr., Ackley, Iowa, Psychology) both connected on a three-pointer near the end of the period in hopes of getting the offense going for the Statesmen, but WPU trailed 43-24 at halftime.
Clarke closed the door on William Penn in the second half, outscoring the Statesmen 42-24 after intermission.
William Penn was outshot by the Pride 53.3%-31.6% along with losing the three-point battle 38.1%-35%. The visiting side was also outrebounded 43-26 and committed two more turnovers (13-11).
Aiesha Feagins (Jr., Grand Prairie, Texas, Applied Mathematics) finished with 10 points, while Stewart tallied nine points.
Hames scored seven points, while Emma Morts (Sr., Milford, Ill., Business Management) added six. White paced the rebounding effort with five boards.
Next Up: William Penn will return to Oskaloosa Thursday to host Grand View in Heart action at 5:30 p.m.
