William Penn Sunk by Grand View
Des Moines--The Statesmen women's basketball team outshot its foe, but could not make up for other shortcomings in an 84-67 loss to #22 Grand View in Heart of America Athletic Conference play Wednesday.
WPU (3-9, 2-6 Heart) owned a 41.5%-38.6% shooting edge over the Vikings (11-1, 8-1 Heart), but was outrebounded 42-27 and also committed 14 turnovers (11 for GVU).
The navy and gold fell behind 7-2 early, but responded with 10 of the next 13 points. Unfortunately, Grand View reclaimed the lead for good shortly thereafter.
Down 37-27 at intermission, the Statesmen failed to make up any ground in a deciding third period. WPU was slightly better in the final quarter (23-19), but it was too late at that point.
The rebounding deficit was highlighted by a 14-2 margin in offensive boards in favor of Grand View, which led to an 11-0 difference in second-chance points.
Alyssa Hames (Jr., Ackley, Iowa, Psychology) topped the visitors with 23 points on 7-for-10 shooting; the junior was also 8-for-9 at the free-throw line.
Mercer Roberts (Sr., Myrtle Beach, S.C., Wellness and Recreation) joined Hames in double digits with 11 points, while Ally Stewart (Sr., Victoria, Australia, Sports Management) led the bench with nine points. Stewart was 3-for-6 from the perimeter, while overall the Statesmen outshot the home team 39.1%-38.5%.
Aliyah Myers (Sr., Wichita, Kan., Business Management) produced a solid evening with seven points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Faith Putz (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa, Business Management) matched Myers with seven points, while Taylor Lawhorne (So., Amityville, N.Y., Business Management) contributed five points.
Despite committing three more turnovers than GVU, William Penn outscored its opponent 15-12. Both sides were competent at the charity stripe with WPU going 14-for-20 and the Vikings finishing 20-for-22.
