Oskaloosa--The Statesmen women's basketball team was denied in its attempt for an upset Saturday, falling 103-55 to Benedictine in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.
William Penn (3-18, 2-15 Heart) was outshot 57.5%-33.3% and outrebounded 46-28. Unfortunately, the squad also struggled with ball control, committing 20 turnovers, compared to 12 for BC (14-6, 12-4 Heart).
Mercer Roberts (Sr., Myrtle Beach, S.C., Wellness and Recreation) scored the first basket of the afternoon, but the rest of the game belong to the visitors as they rolled out to a large advantage and were never threatened.
The Statesmen attempted to climb back in with nine three-pointers, but they came on a 25.0% clip. William Penn's struggles in turnovers led to a 37-12 deficit in points off mistakes, while Benedictine's rebounding prowess also resulted in a 17-2 margin in second-chance points for the visitors.
Of WPU's nine trifectas, Ally Stewart (Sr., Victoria, Australia, Sports Management) made four en route to 12 points. The senior also collected six rebounds to lead her crew. Alyssa Hames (Jr., Ackley, Iowa, Psychology) knocked down two more long balls as she matched Stewart with a dozen points.
Aysia Arrowood (Jr., Wichita, Kan., Sports Management) and Jaida Smith (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis., Business Management) were good for nine points each Saturday, while Roberts finished with six.
