William Penn Battles Against Loaded Field in Tennessee
Old Hickory, Tenn.--The Statesmen women's golf team took on some of the best in the nation as it competed at the Music City Invitational Monday and Tuesday.
#21 WPU placed 15th out of 16 teams with a three-round score of 950 (320-315-315) at the par-72 Hermitage Golf Course. #2 Dalton State (Ga.) claimed the crown at 887 (298-295-294).
Thirteen of the squads in the competition are currently ranked in the NAIA's current top-25 poll.
Hoi Ki Lau of Keiser (Fla.) won the individual medalist honor with a one-over 217 (72-72-73).
Olivia Lange (So., Buckeburg, Germany, Business Management) topped the navy and gold's effort, tying for 37th out of 99 players at 233 (75-76-82), while Gabriana Franco (Fr., Tracy, Calif., Exercise Science) was also in the top 50 in a tie for 41st at 234 (78-79-77).
Courtney Jackson (Sr., Liberty Lake, Wash., Digital Communication) was next at 239 (79-80-80) to tie for 67th, while Carlee Frayne (Jr., Garner, Iowa, Sport Management) took 81st at 248 (89-80-79). Jaclyn Wojciechowski (Sr., Graytown, Ohio, Business Management) finished the tournament in a tie for 87th at 257 (88-90-79).
Grace Butler (Jr., Arnolds Park, Iowa, Engineering) battled as an individual as well, tying for 93rd with a score of 271 (91-91-89).
"This tournament has been circled on the calendar all year," Head Coach Elise Warne said. "We were excited to get down here and compete against a stacked field, including most of the top 20 teams in the nation."
"Overall, we did not perform as we wanted to," Warne added. "Throughout the week we talked about the opportunity that we had to play another 54-hole tournament and to compete against the best in the country. Our focus was to play as best as we could, knowing that each tournament is going to help us prepare for conference in May. We showed some really good moments throughout the tournament, but we were not able to put a really good team score together."
"We have a quick turnaround with the Dalton State tournament next week," Warne said. "We will take a lot of good out of this week and work on our weaknesses to be best prepared for another stacked tournament."
Next Up: William Penn travels to Cohutta, Ga. next Monday and Tuesday to compete in the Dalton State Invitational. Play will be contested at Nob North Golf Course.
