Statesmen Suffer First Loss

Statesmen Suffer First Loss

Miami Gardens, Fla.--The William Penn women's lacrosse team opened its Sunshine State trip Tuesday and unfortunately was handed its first of the year, falling to St. Thomas 22-15 in a non-conference matchup.

The Statesmen (5-1) put up a fight but could not pull off the win, as it was outshot 40-31 by St Thomas (2-5).

The visitors rolled out to a 5-0 lead to start the contest with MacKenzie Petersen (Sr., Albertville, Minn., Public Accounting) scoring three times, while Bailee Royal (Sr., Hallsville, Texas, Sports Management) and Emily Ferguson (Jr., Waterloo, N.Y., Exercise Science) recorded one of their own. St. Thomas bounced right back, however, and tallied five in a row to end the quarter at 5-5.

Royal added three more goals in the second quarter, while Ferguson scored another.  Unfortunately, St. Thomas was on fire and stormed ahead with seven goals to go up 12-9 heading into halftime.

William Penn got on the board early in the third period, closing the deficit to one at 13-12 with goals from Ferguson, Peterson, and Royal.  The Bobcats would not let the Statesmen get any closer, though, extending their lead with back-to-back goals and heading into the fourth quarter up 15-12.

Royal scored twice in the final stanza, while Ferguson added one tally.  Unfortunately, STU continued to pour it on with seven goals to post the win.

William Penn unfortunately lost the draw control battle 26-16 and fell short in ground balls, 20-11.  The navy and gold were better in turnovers, however, committing just 16 mistakes, compared to 18 for the Bobcats.

Royal led her squad in scoring with seven goals on just nine attempts.  Ferguson and Peterson each found the back of the net four times as well.  All but one of the WPU goals were unassisted with Kenzington Winget (So., West Jordan, Utah, Sports Management) recording the lone helper.

Annie Gruber (Jr., Eagan, Min., Psychology) recorded 13 saves against 35 shots faced.

Next Up: William Penn will travel over to Lake Wales, Fla. Thursday to take on Warner, 4 p.m. (Central)
