Oskaloosa--The Statesmen women's soccer team sent its senior class out with smiles as it won 1-0 over Park on Senior Day in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Saturday.
WPU (3-10-1, 3-6-1 Heart), which snapped its six-game losing streak, tied the Pirates 8-8 in shots (4-3 in shots on goal).
William Penn came out the gates hot as Kaitlin Falaney (Sr., Ottawa, Ill., Sports Management) found the back of the net in the 12th minute on an unassisted goal. It is Falaney's fourth goal of the season.
In a defensive battle that was affected by windy conditions at Drost Field, the navy and gold held that advantage over Park (6-5-3, 4-5-1 Heart) the rest of the afternoon. The victory keeps the Statesmen in contention for a berth into the Heart Tournament; they are just two points behind Culver-Stockton for the eighth and final spot.
"It was great to get a winon senior day." Head coach Andy Commins said. "We had standout performances from two seniors; Zo Samuel had a great defensive game and Kaitlin Falaney scored the winning goal. We hope to carry some momentum into the remainder of the season."
Falaney and Taylor Witthauer (Jr., Vancouver, Wash., Nursing) paced the offense with two shots apiece, while multiple other Statesmen had one attempt. Madeline Danielson (So., La Crescent, Minn., Exercise Science) earned the shutout by tallying four saves.
