Pair of Second-Half Goals Sink WPU in Rivalry Matchup with GVU

Des Moines--The Statesmen women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with its rival Tuesday, but could not come away with a road victory as it fell 2-0 to Grand View in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.

William Penn (4-10-1, 1-8-1 Heart) matched the Vikings (5-6-3, 5-4-1 Heart) in shots on goal with six each, but came up a bit short in the overall shots tally, 16-11.

Olivia Walker (So., Caro, Mich., Biology) opened the action with a shot in the fourth minute of the game that was saved by the GVU goalkeeper.

Georgia Murphy (Sr., Liverpool, England, Wellness and Recreation), in the 20th minute, and Emma Brandt (Fr., Cologne, Germany, Sports Management), in the 22nd minute, also put an attempt on target in the first half, but to no avail.

Fortunately, the Vikings were also held out of the goal entering intermission.

In the 57th minute, Abi Moers (Sr., Evergreen, Colo., Psychology) was denied, as was Lina Regadane (Fr., IJmuiden, Netherlands, Business Management) in the 61st minute.

The home team then unfortunately finally broke through, scoring at the 62:15 and 67:31 marks.

Murphy, who finished with two shots, attempted to cut into the deficit in the 73rd, but her shot was saved and the Statesmen left the Capitol City without a goal.

Taylor Witthauer (Sr., Vancouver, Wash., Nursing) topped WPU with three shots as eight different Statesmen recorded a try in the league matchup.

Madeline Danielson (Jr., La Crescent, Minn., Biology) ended the contest with four saves.

Next Up: William Penn, which unfortunately will not qualify for the Heart Tournament, will close out its season Saturday by traveling to Parkville, Mo. to face Park in Heart play at 12 p.m.
