William Penn Ties with Northwestern

William Penn Ties with Northwestern

Orange City--The Statesmen women's soccer team scored both of Friday's goals, but unfortunately one was into its own netting as it posted a 1-1 non-conference tie against Northwestern.

WPU (1-1-2) managed a 17-9 edge in shots against the Raiders.  Unfortunately, William Penn also led in fouls at 13-10 as was given four yellow cards throughout the contest.

Although the first half was scoreless, the Statesmen shot seven times, while Northwestern (0-3-1) tallied four.

The navy and gold missed on several chances early in the second half, including two shots from Elycia Cooley (Jr., Galveston, Texas, Biology) and one from Sian Bah (Jr., London, England, Political Science) before Bah finally got on the board unassisted at the 51:10 mark.

The visitors stayed on top throughout most of the second half, but with eight minutes left, the navy and gold attempted to clear the ball out of their box and it ricocheted off a player and into their goal.

Neither side could break the 1-1 tie in the final minutes as WPU had to settle for its second draw of the year.

The Statesmen had a balanced attack with seven different players recording a shot.  Cooley led the way with six attempts, while Bah finished with four tries.

Madeline Danielson (Sr., La Crescent, Minn., Biology) kept the match tied with five saves.

"Today was our most complete performance of the season, even if it was not our best result," Head Coach Kaleb Preston said.  "We played well for 90 minutes and a small lapse prevented us from winning back-to-back matches.  I am very impressed with our progress this far."

Next Up: William Penn travels to Ashland, Mo. next Tuesday to face Stephens in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
