Oskaloosa--The William Penn women's soccer team came up short in Heart of America Athletic Conference action, falling 5-0 to Clarke Wednesday.
WPU (2-3-3, 0-2 Heart) was outshot 18-7 by the Pride (5-1-2, 2-0 Heart), including an 11-3 mark in shots on goal.
The visitors took the early lead with a goal in the seventh minute and then doubled their edge three minutes later. CU held a 10-4 margin in first-half shots, but the navy and gold were able to keep the Pride off the board for the remainder of the opening 45 minutes.
Unfortunately, Clarke kept the proverbial pedal down and added three more insurance goals after intermission, while the Statesmen failed to present much of an offensive threat.
Elycia Cooley (Jr., Galveston, Texas, Biology) paced the home squad with two shots, while Emma Billings (Fr., Salt Lake City, Utah, Psychology) entered at the break and recorded four saves in 45 minutes of work.
"It is hard not to be disappointed after a result like this," Head Coach Kaleb Preston said. "Our team has the capability to be competitive against Clarke and other high-level teams in our conference. Tonight was just a case of underperforming and not playing to our abilities. We will keep working and things will fall into place."
