
Statesmen Handle Bobcats in Sweep
Oskaloosa--The William Penn women's volleyball team scored on over 40% of its attacks as it defeated Peru State 3-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Friday.
WPU (18-13, 11-6 Heart), which won by scores of 25-10, 25-13, 25-11, outhit the Bobcats .413-.055 with 45 winners against just seven errors. The navy and gold also edged PSC (6-21, 3-14 Heart) in aces (6-0) and blocks (7-2).
The first four points of the evening were recorded by the hosts and they never looked back. The victors trailed just one time (2-1 in the second set), pulling away in each set with six different runs of at least four unanswered points (high of seven in a row).
While a Trick-Or-Treating event was happening behind the bleachers in the Penn Activity Center, Alyvia Johnson (So., Owatonna, Minn., Business Management) was having a monster performance of her own with 15 kills on a .467 attack clip (just one error). The sophomore notched 16 digs as well for a double-double.
Andressa Borges (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil, Sports Management) narrowly missed double figures with nine kills, while middle hitters Corrin Lepper (Sr., Jefferson City, Mo., Biology) and Alyssa Young (Sr., Winter Springs, Fla., Biology) both added six winners.
The Statesmen distributed the ball well Friday with seven different individuals tallying an assist. Of the six William Penn aces, Caidince Cleveland (So., Bettendorf, Iowa, General Accounting) served up four of them.
Defensively, Cecily Liphardt (Sr., Lincoln, Neb., Psychology and Business Management) was high on the digs leaderboard with 14, while Lepper headlined the net defenders with five block assists.
"This was a great team win," Head Coach Lauren Eldridge said. "We dominated from start to finish, just like we talked about before the match. We showed up on both ends. It is exactly what we needed going into the final matches of the regular season and into the postseason."
Next Up: William Penn remains in Oskaloosa Saturday to host Graceland in Heart play at 7 p.m. The matchup will also serve as Senior Night.
