Loss to Ravens Concludes Weekend

Atchison, Kan.--The Statesmen women's volleyball team failed to slow down Benedictine as it fell 3-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Saturday.

WPU (11-9, 1-3 Heart), which lost by scores of 13-25, 18-25, 23-25, came up short in the hitting battle, .374-.103.

William Penn led for a good chunk of the opening set, but at 10-9, the proverbial wheels came off as the Ravens (11-3, 2-0 Heart) tallied seven of the next eight points and rolled to the 1-0 edge.

BC started the second round with another 7-1 run, and while the navy and gold settled down, they could not overcome the hole that was dug and fell behind 2-0.

Down 10-4 in the third set, the Statesmen appeared doomed for a quick exit, but they battled back and posted a 9-1 run to get on top.  Unfortunately, the Ravens were too much to handle with six of the final eight points to wrap up the sweep.

Alyvia Johnson (Sr., Owatonna, Minn., Business Management) and Katlyn Jeter (Sr., Solon, Iowa, Business Management) provided nearly all of their team's offense with 10 kills each.  Jeter served up a pair of aces as well.

Lydia Huston (Jr., Kansas City, Mo., Biology) captained the crew with 26 assists, while defensively, Kaya Caprini (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn., Psychology) had 16 digs and Jade Melton (Sr., Hallsville, Mo., Psychology) and Emilie Bojorquez-McFadden (So., Surprise, Ariz., Undecided) each had a part in two blocks.

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa next Saturday to host Culver-Stockton in Heart action at 2 p.m.
