Statesmen Fall Short in Road Tilt at Grand View

Des Moines--The William Penn women's volleyball team could not resolve its recent woes Tuesday as it fell 3-0 to Grand View in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.

WPU (11-11, 1-5 Heart), which lost by scores of 19-25, 19-25, 21-25, was outhit .168-.084.

The visitors split the first 24 points of the night, but then permitted the Vikings (6-9, 4-3 Heart) to take seven of the next eight plays as they dropped the opening set.

The second round was unfortunately much of the same.  Holding even at 7-7, the navy and gold lost three straight en route to falling into a 2-0 hole.

Down 7-4 in the third set, William Penn caught fire with a handful of mini runs to turn the three-point deficit into a six-point edge at 16-10.  The visiting crew could not keep GVU at bay, however, as the hosts rallied to finish the evening.

Alyvia Johnson (Sr., Owatonna, Minn., Business Management) hit double figures with 10 kills, while also recording 10 digs for a double-double.

Katlyn Jeter (Sr., Solon, Iowa, Business Management) followed with six kills, while Nicole McManus (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev., Business Management) tallied five.

Lydia Huston (Jr., Kansas City, Mo., Biology), with 13 assists, and Emalee Young (So., O'Fallon, Mo., Nursing), with 10, quarterbacked the offense from the setter position.  Defensively, Kaya Caprini (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn., Psychology) topped the back row with 28 digs.

Both sides recorded four blocks, but William Penn lost the aces battle 8-2.
