WPU Finishes Perfect Weekend with Triumph Over Clarke

Oskaloosa--The William Penn women's volleyball team capped a perfect weekend by rallying past Clarke 3-2 in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Saturday.

The Statesmen (13-11, 3-5 Heart) won by scores of 23-25, 25-10, 25-18, 25-16.

Just over 12 after taking care of Mount Mercy, the navy and gold got by the Pride (11-10, 2-6 Heart) with a .247-.101 hitting edge.

The hosts failed to carry their momentum from Friday into the opening set as the visitors claimed the 1-0 edge.  Up 15-13, the navy and gold permitted CU to score five of the next six points and they never led again.

The Statesmen fortunately solved their poor play in the next round.  After sharing the first four points with the Pride, WPU scored seven in a row as part of a 10-1 run and easily tied the match at 1-1.  The victors hit a blistering .636 in the second set with 14 kills and no errors.

While not nearly as dominant in the final two sets, William Penn had little issue putting the bout to rest in the third and fourth.  Leading by only one point at 15-14 in the fourth, the navy and gold closed strong with a 10-2 run.

Katlyn Jeter (Sr., Solon, Iowa, Business Management) wrapped up the victory with WPU's final two points on a day where she guided the Statesmen with 17 kills.

Alyvia Johnson (Sr., Owatonna, Minn., Business Management) contributed 12 kills, while Patricia De Souza (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil, Sports Management) also hit double digits with 10 on a .474 attacking clip.  Nicole McManus (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev., Business Management) and Cate Hahn (Sr., St. Charles, Mo., Biology) were impressive offensively as well with seven winners each.

For the second outing in a row, Lydia Huston (Jr., Kansas City, Mo., Biology), with 23 assists, and Emalee Young (So., O'Fallon, Mo., Nursing), with 21, worked well in the two-setter system.  Young was also successful at the service line with five of her crew's 10 aces.

Kaya Caprini (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn., Psychology) had a team-best 20 digs, while Johnson notched another double-double with 15 digs.

Hahn's three blocks paced the William Penn's defensive net presence.

Next Up: William Penn remains in Oskaloosa next Tuesday to host Graceland in Heart play at 7 p.m.
