WPU Wins Four Times at Cumberlands Duals
Williamsburg, Ky.--The Statesmen women's wrestling team saw an incredible amount of action Friday and Saturday as it competed at the Cumberlands Patriot Duals.
William Penn (4-6) went 4-5 at the Duals and placed fourth in the Red bracket. In Friday's pool action, WPU was 2-2 with wins over Brewton-Parker (Ga.) 33-10 and Hiram (Ohio) (38-5) and losses to host Cumberlands (26-15) and Limestone (S.C.) (21-14).
In Saturday's Red bracket competition, the Statesmen defeated Brewton-Parker 35-8 and Montreat (N.C.) 28-19, but fell to Siena Heights (Mich.) 34-10, Campbellsville (Ky.) 27-15, and Emmanuel (Ga.) 31-10.
WPU 33, Brewton-Parker 10
In a meet where the Statesmen collected four forfeits, 116-pounder Grecia Martinez (Fr., Horizon City, Texas, Industrial Technology) won by fall, while 143-pounder Ashleigh Denny (So., El Paso, Texas, Undecided) and 155-pounder Kaylah Johnson (Fr., Houston, Texas, Biology) each posted technical fall victories.
WPU 38, Hiram 5
In addition to three forfeits, the navy and gold dominated with falls from 130-pounder Mariah Webster (Fr., Mingo, Iowa, Elementary Education), 136-pounder Alexis Cervantes (Fr., San Diego, Calif., Biology), and 170-pounder Kylee Eastwood (Fr., Fontana, Kan., Undecided). Tatiana Garcia (Fr., Amarillo, Texas, Psychology), at 123 pounds, and Denny, tacked on wins via technical fall.
Cumberlands 26, WPU 15
Brittany Cotter (So., Katy, Texas, Nursing) notched a technical fall triumph at 123 pounds, while Webster and Denny each pinned their foes.
Limestone 21, WPU 14
Garcia shut out her foe 8-0 and the Statesmen picked up two forfeits in Friday's finale.
WPU 35, Brewton-Parker 8
Five forfeits were more than enough for William Penn, but Denny tacked on a fall, while 155-pounder MayLee Edwards (So., Newton, Kan., Psychology) also dropped her opponent by technical fall.
WPU 28, Montreat 19
A trio of forfeits were accompanied by technical falls by Denny and Johnson, while Eastwood pinned her foe.
Siena Heights 34, WPU 10
Catherine Steinkamp (So., Quincy, Ill., Biology) was WPU's lone victor in a contested match, pinning her opponent at 116 pounds. The Statesmen earned points via a forfeit as well.
Campbellsville 27, WPU 15
Three forfeits were not enough to get past Campbellsville.
Emmanuel 31, WPU 10
Steinkamp and Cotter had their hands raised due to technical falls.
