Depleted Statesmen Fall Twice in Heart Duals

Forest City--Competing with just a fraction of its normal lineup, the William Penn women's wrestling team dropped two Heart of America Athletic Conference dual meets Monday.

WPU (2-5, 0-3 Heart) lost 40-6 to Missouri Valley and was nipped 25-23 by host Waldorf.

Catherine Steinkamp (Jr., Quincy, Ill., Exercise Science) managed the lone victory for the navy and gold against Missouri Valley, defeating Maddie Lincoln by a 10-0 technical fall at 116 pounds.

155-pounder Kaylah Johnson (So., Houston, Texas, Biology) and 191-pounder Samantha Ruano (Sr., Romeoville, Ill., Business Management) also both scored in losses by decision to give William Penn one point each against the Vikings.

The Waldorf meet began at 136 pounds and after losing the opening bout, the Statesmen flipped roles when 143-pounder Isabelle Hawley (So., Winchester, Calif., Sociology) pinned Yana Paskar in the first period for a 5-4 team advantage.

Johnson then jumped up to 170 pounds and rolled over Amaya Lopez with an 11-0 technical fall to knot things up at 9-9.  Eventually going down 19-9, the visitors got right back in the matchup with back-to-back forfeits for Teya Garner (Fr., San Antonio, Texas, Biology) at 109 pounds and Steinkamp at 116 pounds.

Grecia Martinez (So., Horizon City, Texas, Engineering) then put WPU back on top at 23-20 as she won 12-2 over Amanda Durrant.  Unfortunately, the Statesmen came up short in the final match and lost the dual.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Waverly Saturday for another triangular.  The Statesmen will meet Augsburg at 1 p.m. with a matchup against host Wartburg to follow later at approximately 2 p.m.
