Abu Ibrahim
, MBL, LAT, ATC, CSCS, is in his sixth year as the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine.  He works primarily with athletic bands, color guard, men's basketball, men's golf, women's golf, and shotgun sports.

Ibrahim came to WPU from Wayne State College in Nebraska where he served more than two years as an Assistant Athletic Trainer.  He was the trainer for the WSC football and women’s basketball teams his first two seasons.

No stranger to Oskaloosa, Ibrahim was a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at William Penn from 2013-2015 while earning his Master’s of Business Leadership degree.  While at WPU, he worked directly with six sports and also offered his services for the North Mahaska High School football team.

A 2013 graduate of Northeastern University in Massachusetts with a degree in Athletic Training, Ibrahim completed clinical rotations at Northeastern, Harvard University, Eastern Nazarene College, and at the high school and junior college levels while at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Complex.  He also has three years of experience in outpatient physical therapy with Sports and Physical Therapy Associates in Massachusetts.

Ibrahim has been Athletic Training Board Certified since 2013 and is a member of the National Athletic Trainer's Association.  He is currently a Licensed Athletic Trainer, and maintains a certification as a Red Cross/CPR AED instructor.  He is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

Ibrahim resides in Oskaloosa with his wife Elise, who is also the Head Men's and Women's Golf Coach at WPU.  The couple has a son, Zayn.





Natasha Schmitter
, ATC, LAT, is in her fifth year as an assistant in the Sports Medicine department. She works primarily with women’s volleyball, men’s wrestling, and men’s lacrosse.

Prior to her time at WPU, Schmitter worked at Graceland University from 2013-2016.  She then took time away from the profession and worked at Cambridge Investment Research from 2016-2019.

Schmitter graduated in 2010 from Western Illinois University with a degree in Kinesiology centered in Athletic Training. She has experience working in physical therapy clinics, high school outreach, and within an orthopedic surgeon’s office.

Schmitter has been Athletic Trainer Board Certified since 2010 and is a member of the National Athletic Trainer's Association (NATA).  She was also a member of the Career Advancement Committee for the Iowa Athletic Trainers Society from 2021-2022.

A native of Wayland, Iowa, Schmitter resides in Oskaloosa with her two daughters, Amelia and Jocelyn.






Kayla Jackson
, MSM, LAT, ATC, is in her third year as an assistant in the Sports Medicine department.  She works primarily with men's bowling, women's bowling, women's soccer, and softball.

A 2020 graduate of William Penn with a Master’s of Sports Management degree, she also worked with the North Mahaska HS football team and the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont HS basketball teams.

A native of Akron, Ohio, Jackson earned her Athletic Training degree from the University of Akron in 2019.

She has been a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association since 2016.






Samantha Jacobs, MS, ATC, is in her second year as an assistant in the Sports Medicine department. She works primarily with men’s soccer, men's indoor track and field, women's indoor track and field, men's outdoor track and field, women's outdoor track and field, cheer, and dance.

Jacobs is a 2020 graduate of Benedictine College (Kan.) with a degree in Athlete Health Care.  As a student at BC, Jacobs worked with their baseball, football, and women’s soccer teams.

Jacobs then earned her Master’s of Athletic Training from Texas Tech University in 2022.  At TTU, she served as a student athletic trainer with the TTU and Lubbock Christian University track and field teams, Frenship High School, and Lubbock Sports Medicine.






Caleb Lunney, ATC, LAT, is in his first year as an assistant in the Sports Medicine department.  He works with men's cross country, women's cross country, men’s volleyball, and women’s lacrosse.

A 2021 graduate of Culver-Stockton College with a degree in Health Science, Lunney competed two years on the men’s soccer team.

Lunney earned his Master’s of Athletic Training from Grand View University in 2023.  While at GVU, he worked primarily with soccer, wrestling, and baseball.

A graduate of Olathe North High School, he was a four-time letterwinner in soccer.

Born in Des Moines, Lunney considers himself a native of Kansas City, Mo.  He currently resides in Pella.





Stormy Simons
, MS, LAT, ATC, is in her first year as an assistant in the Sports Medicine department.  She works primarily with football and women’s wrestling.

Prior to her time at WPU, Simons worked as the Head Athletic Trainer at Iowa Wesleyan University from 2022-2023. Before that, she worked for Westmoore High School in Moore, OK as their assistant AT.

Simons is a 2019 graduate of Hannibal-LaGrange University (MO.) with a degree in Exercise Science. As a student at HLG, Simons worked with their wrestling, softball, baseball, volleyball, basketball, and soccer teams.

Simons then earned her Master's of Athletic Training from Culver Stockton College in 2021.  At CSC, she served as a student athletic trainer with Football, volleyball, baseball, soccer teams, along with other outreach clinicals at different universities and hospital clinics. She has also done an internship with the OKC Energy FC in Oklahoma for two summers.














Jon Gehrke
, M.D. joined the Mahaska Health orthopaedics care team 2019. Dr. Gehrke is Board Certified and completed three Fellowships in sports medicine, general orthopaedics and foot & ankle surgery. He practiced at Des Moines Orthopaedic Surgeons (DMOS) for 23 years prior to joining Mahaska Health, and has authored numerous articles for national publications and served on several boards, including the Academic Orthopaedic Faculty of both the University of Missouri and Ohio State University.

Dr. Gehrke specializes in general orthopaedics, sports medicine, ACL, meniscus and knee conditions, hip and knee replacements, foot and ankle surgery, as well as rotator cuff repair and fracture fixation. He is also an expert in Regenerative Medicine procedures and the use of Ortho Biologics that includes the use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections for non-operative orthopaedic conditions.

Gehrke lives in Oskaloosa with his wife Laurie and enjoys volunteering, serving as the Sports Medicine Physician for William Penn University and board member for the YMCA.

 




Michael Shaw
, PA-C, MPAS is a Nationally Certified, Masters and Fellowship-trained Physician Assistant. Mike Shaw provides comprehensive general orthopedic care and assists in surgical cases to include procedures for complex orthopaedic trauma, total joint replacements of the shoulder, hip, and knee, as well as treatments for ailments including arthritis, bursitis and more. He is also an expert in Regenerative Medicine procedures and the use of Ortho Biologics that includes the use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections for non-operative orthopaedic conditions.
